About Altaussee

The village of Altaussee is considered a “hidden gem” within Austria and is still considered a “secret spot”. The beauty of Altaussee is that you simply “arrive”: a small, romantic village, steeped in history and tradition, nestled between 2 impressive mountains, the “Loser and the “Trisselwand”  with the most beautiful lake on its doorstep: The Altausseer Sea.

The walk around the lake is one of the most beautiful path ways of the entire region. Magnificent views to the surrounding mountains to the glacier “Dachstein” turn this hiking route which is suitable for the entire family to an unforgettable adventure.

In the Summer the lake is perfect for swimming in the crystal clear water which boasts “drinking quality” with tiny beaches scattered all over the lake inviting visitors to arrive by foot or boat to enjoy the moment and the beauty of this amazing place. Fishing, sailing, hiking, river rafting, hang gliding, parachuting, tennis, horse riding as well as “stalking and shooting” are some of the many activities this village offers you. In the winter the Loser skiing arena is a perfect family destination and for the more discerning skiers off piste tours and skiing with skins can be arranged. Further, skiing areas such as Taublitz, Dachstein and Schladming  are all within 20 to 45 min drive away.

Altaussee is recognised as a “LUFTKURORT” and famous for its saltmines and wellness and health offerings; it has long been visited by Austria´s old aristocracy, patrons, artists and famous musicians. It is here, where the famous, world renowned “Salzburger Festspiele” were founded by Johann Strauss and Hugo v Hoffmansthal which later moved to Salzburg where it is now a fixture in the Summer for the world’s leading concerts, opera, musicians and singers.
